Teen Driver 100 Deadliest DaysSummertime turns out to be one of the deadliest times of the year for teen drivers. The time period between Memorial Day and Labor Day has been dubbed the “100 Deadliest Days” for teenage drivers.

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety recently reported that for new drivers (age 16-17) the likelihood of a fatal car accident is three times higher than that for an adult. During the summer, those odds grow even more startling. Compared to the rest of the year, teen auto accidents resulting in death rise 15% over the summer when more young drivers are out on the roadways more often.

Teen drivers often engage in risky behavior that only exacerbates the effects of their inexperience behind the wheel, such as:

  • Not wearing seatbelts
  • Texting while driving
  • Being distracted by passengers
  • Exceeding posted speed limits

Parents can help educate teens about the responsibilities and the dangers that accompany driving, but not all accidents can be prevented.
