Gall Bladder Injury
I
n the late 1980's a new type of surgery for gall bladder disease was perfected. This surgery, called laparoscopic cholecystectomy, became the method by which most gall bladder removal surgeries were done, and laparoscopic cholecystectomy is still by far the most common type of gall bladder surgery which is done.
Unfortunately, if this type of gall bladder surgery isn't done right, the patient can be severely and permanently injured. The biggest danger is injury to the main bile duct, which drains the liver into the bowel. Cutting or blocking this duct will result in liver failure if untreated. These injuries happen when the surgeon fails to properly determine what he is cutting, and cuts the wrong part of the patient's body.
Not only can this injury be fatal if not treated, but treating it is often extremely difficult and dangerous. Many patients go through two or more additional surgeries. Some require a liver transplant. Medical bills can reach into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
And all because a surgeon didn't take the time to make sure he was cutting the right duct instead of the wrong one.
