Cerebral palsy (CP) is a neurological disorder that shows up in infancy or early childhood. It may not be found until the child is several months, or possibly several years old. You will likely notice your child has trouble with coordination and movement difficulties.

If your child has been diagnosed with CP, there are several steps you can take.

  • Diagnosis – First, you’ll want to make sure your child has been properly diagnosed with CP. Your doctor will run the necessary tests to see if CP is indeed the problem.
  • Treatments – CP will require a lifetime of treatment. Because it is a brain injury, there is no cure. However, advancements in technology make treating victims of CP much easier.
  • Talk to a Lawyer – CP can be caused by many different factors, including birth complications, shaken baby syndrome, infections, mistakes or incompetence during delivery or pre-natal care. You may be able to file a medical malpractice claim against those who have caused your child’s health problems.

An experienced birth injury attorney can help you with resources and educate you about what can be done legally. Sometimes a CP lawsuit provides a way for parents to get enough compensation to help pay for their child’s treatments that they need and to cover their pain and suffering.
