Signs of Kernicterus
When babies are born with severe jaundice, they can develop a rare type of brain damage called kernicterus. A substance in the blood, called bilirubin, builds up to very dangerous levels and spreads into the brain tissues, causing permanent brain damage.
Symptoms of kernicterus include:
- Very yellow or orange (skin color changes start from the head and spread to the toes)
- Lethargy and excessive sleepiness
- Is not breastfeeding or sucking from a bottle well
- Is very fussy
- Does not have at least four wet or dirty diapers in 24 hours
- Has an abnormally high-pitched cry
- Has a fever with any of the above symptoms
If severe jaundice is not treated, long-term and permanent damage can include:
- Hearing loss
- Problems moving the eyes, especially when attempting to look up
- Trouble with movement
- Developmental problems and learning disabilities
By knowing the signs and symptoms of kernicterus, you may be able to help your child from facing life-long difficulties. Pay attention to what your doctor recommends with your new baby. Because jaundice is worst when your baby is five days old, speak with your doctor if you have any concerns.
