Different Types of Automobile Collisions

There are many different types of car crashes, and knowing the differences between the various types and the way in which negligence is determined in each is crucial in a court of law, since negligence ultimately determines how claims and damages are awarded. Here are a few of the different types of automobile collisions:

  • Rear End Collisions - the most common of all types of collisions, rear end collisions are often the fault of the trailing driver, either through following closely or a lack of attention paid to the road, invoking in Texas what is known as the "proper lookout" standard. These collisions can also result in severe head, neck, or back injuries.
  • Intersection Collisions - as its name implies, these collisions happen at intersections: two-, three-, or four-way stops, driveways, etc. These accidents usually involve one car on a "favored" road and one on an "inferior" road. In most cases, the car on the favored road has the right-of-way, and if involved in an accident, is not at fault. But, on occasion the car on the inferior road may actually have the right-of-way. A skilled lawyer with experience handling automobile accident cases will be well-versed in determining exactly who was negligent in an accident.
  • Lane Change Collisions - occurring when a car changes lanes or moves into the adjacent space already occupied by a vehicle, lane change collisions are common and very dangerous. Though it would seem, since the cars were traveling in the same speed and same direction that the results would be minor, these crashes often involve one car swerving to avoid another, leading to even more potential danger.
  • Left Turn Collisons - while sometimes falling under rear end and intersection collisions, left turn collisions are so dangerous because the turning car has to cross the path of traffic, creating the potential for a front to side collision. Left turns are so dangerous that if a car is involved in a collision while making a left turn, it is up to them to disprove their negligence, which is automatically assumed.
  • Road Condition Collisons - some collisions are not necessarily the fault of one driver or another, but are a result of poor or defective road conditions, such as faulty or missing traffic signals or a roadway that falls below required safety standards. These types of cases can often be complex because who is responsible for the accident-causing condition may not be entirely clear, or the condition may include a number of contributing factors.

Each of these types of collisions presents its own unique set of challenges when
filing claims and attempting to determine negligence. An experienced attorney with significant knowledge about the various types of collisions, like those at Polewski & Associates, can insure that your case is handled in the best manner possible.
